Soft Screw

Screw dimensions approximately  eight feet. Calico and curtain lining.
Originally an installation entitled ‘White Elephants’. The increased scale of the objects was designed to emphasise their uselessness.

Screw, Paint Tube and Cap.
This work developed as a result of my frustration at not being able to create anything during the summer vacation. I had problems with a member of the family, and all my efforts to ease a complicated situation were thwarted. I was angry, frustrated, and exhausted by all that was happening. I felt negative and unable to concentrate on anything creative. I felt useless.

I had a couple of slightly abstruse ideas, but needed to be doing something physically constructive, to be using my hands. I wanted to exercise my will, to have control over something. I had had my fill of destructive influence. I felt negative about the whole business of art, particularly sculpture.
